#LightningLounge : We heavily use Notes & Attachments.  I'm trying to understand if there are backwards compatible Classic ways to use Files and Enhanced Notes that would let us fully switch and migrate over to the new objects BEFORE we offer any Lightning experience UI to users.  My theory is yes on Files but maybe no on Notes due to lack of access to the web component?  Just starting to research and play to confirm theories.

Anyone have experience with this piece of the Lightning journey that can shed some light for me?

For everyone else's sake, I can now answer my original questions. Classic DOES support adding both a Files and a separate Notes related list for the new Files and Enhanced Notes records. You can absolutely migrate this piece before moving any page layouts to LEX. I need to reconfirm this but I don't think you even have to turn LEX on in the environment. You only have to enable a single check box to turn on Enhanced Notes.

Where it gets interesting is the 'cut over' from Notes & Attachments. Shutting off the creation of classic Notes and Attachments actually means removing the old Notes & Attachments related list from all page layouts and ensuring you don't have any programmatic customizations, packages, or other integrations working with the classic objects. Furthermore, the Magic Mover tool let's you convert things by object and created or modified date and then later delete the original classic versions by object when ready. What that means is you get to figure out what approach works for you. You can even slow roll by object and page layout if desired.

    Nuances to consider:

    1) For Attachments only (not Notes), as Tom Hoffman mentioned, there is a universal setting you can turn on where, "Files uploaded to the Attachments related list on records are uploaded as Salesforce Files, not as attachments."

    2) Both the Notes & Attachments, Files, and Notes (aka Enhanced Notes) related lists can co-exist on the same classic page. HOWEVER, all Files will ALSO show up within the Notes & Attachments related list with a slightly different appearance than Attachments. This means if you use Magic Mover to convert your Attachments but have not yet deleted the old Attachment versions, you will have two slightly different looking rows per document in the related list. In Contrast, the Notes & Attachments related list DOES NOT show any Enhanced Note records.

    3) For Enhanced Notes, the classic related list adds a truncated no-formatting preview of the text to each list row. When editing Enhanced Notes in classic, you get some new formatting features but only a subset of what the LEX UI offers. Besides that, the UI for the related lists only change slightly. When clicking into an actual File or Enhanced Note though, the preview and detail UI is noticeably different. Users will notice but it feels like a reasonable bite size for training.
