Why Unified App Development Matters

Today's IT teams face a growing gap. Business leaders want AI-powered apps yesterday, but traditional development approaches remain slow and siloed. Low-code teams work separately from pro-code teams, which leads to duplicated effort, wasted time, and frustration. Meanwhile, demand for apps and agents keeps growing.

Its developer, John (he/him), plans to build it with custom React components in 3 weeks. The problem? They don’t know the other is working on it and are duplicating efforts. With the modern approach Salesforce brings to app development, they now collaborate as a team instead of working in silos.

From Clicks to Code and Everything in Between

Salesforce offers two powerful ways to build applications and agents.

Declarative development: This clicks, not code approach uses tools such as Flow Builder and App Builder to create automations and custom apps quickly with no programming required. It's fast, intuitive, and perfect when you need to build quickly.

Pro-code development: This approach uses programming languages such as Apex, JavaScript, and React to build advanced features with complete control and flexibility. When you need complex customization or specialized business logic, pro-code delivers the power you need.

For years, these paths rarely intersected. Admins worked in their tools. Developers worked in theirs. Collaboration was challenging at best.

How the Agentic Era Changes App Development

The way people work is changing. Work is entering the agentic era where autonomous agents work alongside humans to handle complex tasks end to end.

To build these agents and apps effectively, you need a development approach that's equally intelligent and flexible. The Salesforce approach centers on three core principles.

Ideate and Plan

Before you build, align with your team. Bring together architects, developers, admins, and security experts. Define your requirements and clarify your success goals. Consider security and compliance from the start. This prevents building features no one asked for and ensures everyone is working toward the same goal.

Sofia and John hold a 2-hour planning session with their architect and security lead, and define exactly which influencer metrics matter most and which user roles need access.

Build

Your low-code builders and pro-code developers should work together, not in silos. They use the right tools for the job, from drag-and-drop automation to custom React components. And with AI coding assistants, they ship faster than ever.

Sofia builds the core agent logic in Builder Central using natural language prompts. John uses Agentforce Vibes to generate custom React components for the dashboard. Both work simultaneously on the same solution instead of sequentially, which decreases development time.

Test

Testing involves continuous validation throughout the development lifecycle, serving as an ongoing process rather than a final check. To test effectively, you need realistic data that mirrors real-world scenarios. You catch bugs early, simulate real-world conditions with compliant test data, and ensure your agents behave the way you expect before they reach production.

As they test in their sandbox, they encounter a blocker. The service agent can’t access certain influencer records. Sofia uses Setup with Agentforce and enters “Why can't my service agent user access Influencer__c records?”

The tool immediately identifies missing sharing rules and permission sets. She fixes them right away. They also use Vibes to generate 50 test cases automatically, which include edge cases they hadn’t considered. Testing catches a critical permission bug that would have blocked 40% of users in production. By catching it early, the fix is quick and easy.

Deploy

Release day shouldn’t be stressful. With integrated release management tools, you can track changes, automate deployment, and resolve merge conflicts faster. Version control and governance guardrails ensure your apps and agents go live smoothly, without disrupting users.

Using DevOps Center, they deploy to staging in one step, run automated tests, and then promote to production—all in under 30 minutes. The old manual process would have taken 4 hours and required three people.

Observe

After launch, the real work begins. You monitor performance, track user behavior, and continuously optimize. Your agents get smarter. Your apps get better. And your team stays ahead of issues before users notice.

Within the first week, observability data demonstrates that sales reps in Slack engaged with quick action buttons 3x more than traditional forms. They adjust the interface accordingly, which increases adoption by 40%.

Through it all, governance is embedded and not bolted on at the end. Security, compliance, and data protection are built into every stage.
