Join Michelle Wallace for our next Think Data Thursday: Behind the Scenes with Tableau's Social Media Data on Thursday, June 9th!

Think Data Thursday: Behind the Scenes with Tableau's Social Media Data - June 9th, 2016

Social media data is hot stuff—and for good reason. With dozens of platforms and data sources to explore, you can get insights into a lot more than just your likes, follows, and retweets. When used well, social media data can help you uncover rich insights into real-time conversations and connect better with your community of followers.

But how does Tableau actually work with its own social media data? In this session, Michelle Wallace, who leads Tableau’s global social media programs, will share how Tableau uses data to drive decisions about its own social media program. Learn how we collect and manage our data, take a look at our team’s dashboards, and see some of our favorite Tableau tricks in action. Whether you already work with social media data or are just interested in getting started, this session is for you!

Think Data Thursday: Get Hopping with Jump Plot in Tableau

Join us February 11th at 8am PST for our next Think Data Thursday: Get Hopping with Jump Plot in Tableau

What is Jump Plot? Jump Plot helps analysts quickly identify outliers in repeated event sequences. It is built to scale to high volume series executions. Learn more at www.jumpplot.com.

Tom VanBuskirk and Chris DeMartini will take you through the concept and thinking behind the Jump Plot and how Tableau assisted with the origination of the graph. They will discuss when and where use of this novel graph can benefit analysis of your own workflows and sequences. Chris will then take you through a detailed walk through of data preparation steps and development of the Jump Plot, including a few variations and possible alternatives in Tableau.

The session will close with a dashboard demonstration highlighting how variations of Jump Plot can bring value to your own day to day analysis of event sequence workflows.

Thank you to everyone for the great suggestions.  We have 3 months of presentations in process of being coordinated currently.  I will be posting these sessions shortly and marking this thread as answered for the time being.

That said, if you have a great idea for a future Think Data Thursday, please do not hesitate to reach out to our team at Tableau Community with a suggestion, and even better, an offer to present or share on a topic of interest to you.

SUGGESTED TOPIC: What does domain padding mean? What does domain completion mean? How do you accomplish each of these? What are the tricks to get them to work for you, instead of frustrating you?

Great idea Shawn. It's a subject that really needs to be de-mystified. I think only Joe has successfully completed the initiation ceremony so far and Jonathan is let close. It's about time someone else joined them.

What is it on? Just wondering if I can make myself get up in time.

Join us December 3rd at 8:00 AM Pacific as Tableau and Mapbox make ⌗GeospatialLove in this ⌗MapboxFab Think Data Thursday broadcast, live from DataBlick HQ.

By the time you have had your first cup of coffee, Allan Walker, Chris Toomey, and Anya A'Hearn will teach you how to create beautiful custom maps for use in Tableau by establishing your own map layers, styling them in Mapbox, and adding them to a Tableau .tms so you can toggle the map layers on and off in many combinations to help support your visual analysis. Topics include:

  • Styling maps in Mapbox
  • Hacking the .tms in Tableau to add your maps
  • Adding custom shapefile layers / multiple layers
  • Adding multiple layers to the .tms
  • Creating a view swapper in Tableau to toggle on and off layers in the front end
  • Doing it all once Tableau 9.2 is here
  • Thoughts about styling maps / accessibility of maps, including colors, fonts, etc.
  • Concept designs for what "Mapbox GL in Vizable" could offer and the usecases of why this is needed
