Hello Tableau Community,

I am facing an issue with Filter Actions in my Tableau dashboard. I have created:

  • A bar chart showing Ship Mode-wise Sales
  • Another bar chart showing Category-wise Sales
  • A table showing Segment-wise Sales, which is embedded inside the tooltip of both bar charts

Issue:

When I apply Filter Actions on the bar charts, the table inside the tooltip does not get filtered accordingly. The charts update correctly based on the filter selection, but the tooltip table remains unchanged and continues to show all segment-wise sales instead of filtering down as per the selection.

What I Have Tried:

  1. Checked the Filter Action settings:
    • The source sheets (bar charts) and target sheet (table) are correctly selected.
    • The filter action is set to "Run action on Select" and "Clearing the selection will show all values."
  1. Ensured that the table worksheet contains relevant filters:
    • I manually added the necessary filters (Ship Mode, Category) to the table worksheet.
    • I also applied these filters to all relevant worksheets.
  1. Tried using Context Filters:
    • Added the primary filters (Ship Mode, Category) to context in the table worksheet, but it did not resolve the issue.
  1. Verified the Tooltip Settings:
    • The table is correctly embedded in the tooltip using the corresponding worksheet.

Expected Behavior:

When I click on a Ship Mode or Category in the respective bar charts, the tooltip table should update dynamically to show only the relevant segment-wise sales.

Current Behavior:

The tooltip table remains unchanged and continues to show all segment-wise sales data, ignoring the applied filters.

Request for Help:

How can I ensure that the tooltip table updates dynamically based on the selected filter action? Am I missing any step, or is this a known limitation in Tableau? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I feel like I should be able to do it purely with the filter action and sharing the automatically generated filter field with the tooltip sheet (and I've definitely done it that way before), but I can't seem to make that work. Another alternative is to set a parameter based on your first sheet click, and then use that in a filter field for the tooltip sheet, as attached:
