Hi All,

We are needing the input of the community on designing the following business use case with FSL:

  • Our business involves delivering on-site engineering trainings, along with trainers (Service Resources) we need to schedule and track Trailers (carrying equipment to the site) in FSL. The dispatchers need visibility to the trailer locations and be able to look into the future to tell where a given trailer would be 2-weeks from now.
  • The trailers are equipped with verizon location tracking devices and we also plan to setup an integration with Salesforce to bring the location data in almost real-time. The integration is not as much a challenge as identifying how we are tracking these trailers in the first place.

Please share if you have any possible options/ideas to implement this use case. We have played around with the idea of treating the trailers as "Service Resources" to get the benefits of the standard gantt chart and map views, but not sure of what the cons of this approach might be. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, treating trailers as Service Resources in FSL actually works fine if you want them on the Gantt and map alongside trainers. Just make sure to set their Resource Type to something distinct (like “Asset” or “Equipment”) so dispatchers can filter easily. The main con is it adds them into availability/skills logic, so you’ll need to tweak scheduling rules so they don’t get “assigned” like people. You could also link them to Work Orders via a custom lookup to keep history and future bookings visible.
