Hi all, we are a small nonprofit / membership organization with a ~400 person membership. Our members pay dues (some give more than the dues amount as a gift to our org) which makes up about 1/2 of our total fundraising, with the other half being institutional partners. Two questions:

1. As we are transitioning from our old CRM to Salesforce, I'm trying to understand how we can best move historical giving from our old CRM to Salesforce. Should historical giving be considered "Gift Transactions" or should we just call them "Opportunities" that are closed-won with the historical dates? I want to be able to pull up an account profile and say: they've given $X over the past 5 years, on average $Y per year, and this year we're going to ask for $Z

2. Some of our members and our institutional partners make multi-year commitments. In our old CRM, we have recorded that as a pledge and we track payments against that, but I don't see that in Salesforce. Should we use "Gift Commitments" or should we stick with "Opportunities" so we are seeing all opportunities together?

THANK YOU!

NPC is based around Gift Commitments and not opportunities. I think (but have not done it) that you willl be best served implemented simple gift transactions for your historical data. Multi-year are more complex Gift Commitments.
