Chatter notifications (non email) for salesforce communities

Hello,

we are building a community for our partner users. As a part of it, we have built a custom Visualforce Chatter page, and we also need to show a notifications icon for Chatter per partner. So far, I have used the Chatter Connect API and Rest API (Only for Recommendations) for implementing the same. 

But when it comes to notification, there's instructions on how to do it for a Mobile SDK, but how do you proceed for a community (for a non mobile device i.e. via a browser on a laptop) ?

can you please point me to the documentation that can be referred for the same? Also, we don't want Chatter emails for this community, and emails have been turned off.

as we are going live next week, getting this information this week will be useful.

    Hello Rangan, how are you?

    I am working on an employee community using Napili template and we have the same notification requirements. I am wondering how did you accomplished this using visualforce and Chatter API. Is there any useful documentation ?
