I am looking to create a validation rule on the lead object where a rep cannot put the lead status to "Qualified" unless the lead has been converted. What has been happening is that reps would just change the lead status to Qualified thinking they converted the lead but in reality hasn't.

IsConverted,
OR(
ISPICKVAL(Status , 'Qualified')
)
)
The syntax comes up without any errors but it still lets me put the lead status in "Qualified". However, once in Qualified, I am not able to change the status at all nor convert the lead.

In that case I would use a Formula like this
AND(
OR(
TEXT( Status ) = 'Qualified',
IsConverted = TRUE
),
ISBLANK(ConvertedAccountId),
ISBLANK(ConvertedContactId),
ISBLANK(ConvertedOpportunityId)
)
