Convert a lead to a contact which has a mandatory custom field

If I have a custom field 'Mailing List Region' on the Contact record, how do I convert a Lead to a Contact without seeing the following error: "Your lead is missing a field mapping for the Contact.Mailing_List_Region__c field."

I have tried created the Mailing List Region field on the Lead record and mapping them together but the same error appears.
