data import; my first one for v3. I instructed the organization to thoroughly clean their old data before sending it to me for importing, and gave them a number of very specific parameters of what to clean and how. Among them, I told them to put every individual contact from the same household onto its own row in the spreadsheet, and make sure the home address is precisely, character for character, the same--and to highlight those fields in the spreadsheet so I can tell at a glance where there are same-household groupings of contact rows. They followed my instructions to the letter, and the process I had in mind for that approach I thought would work, but now I'm struggling to find the easiest way to import everything.
I thought the template might be it, so I'm following the NPSP administrator's guide to importing, and am using the provided template file. However, it's an enormous amount of cut-and-paste to move the second and third row contact's individually-relevant fields into a single row of Contact1 and Contact2, and then doing a new Contact1 row for the Contact3 people.
I'm wondering if it wouldn't be easier for me to simply import all the contacts as is. Since the import doesn't do address checking against existing account households, that would mean a lot of duplicate account households that need to be merged.
Is there an easy way to merge them all? I have
