how do you make a contact a member of multiple households

We are a school and have students with separated parents. How do others handle their accounts/contacts? I was thinking the 1-to-1 Account Model (one account for every contact) and then using Relationship and Household objects to define the nature of the relationships between contacts but don't know if that addresses the issue (since we are on the Household Account model). Thoughts/advice? Thank you.
