Looking to track time for volunteers

My organization is a nonprofit and we have many volunteers for various events/programs throuhout our various departments. Our volunteer coordinator is looking for abetter way to track them. Currently she is wanting to track them in various ways and to pull reports based on certain criteria. Most importantly she would like to track by hours, by month, and by department worked in. I was wondering if this can be done through Salesforce or if it would be better to use an App on the exchange? If an App would work best are there any you recommend?
