We had a 3rd Party vendor create some agreements for us and we provided them with only 5 record types.  The team then upload aproximately 5000+ records based on those 5 basic types.   Since that time we decided we needed to define record types further and created an additional 7.   Unfortunately  now when I try to export/import or change records in mass, I get a message stating they have to be changed manually.  "Existing picklists aren’t updated when record types change. You’ll need to change picklist values manually."

All told we're probalby talking about 65 - 70% that would have to be touched.   I'm brand new to SF but I don't see any work-around to this.   Hoping somebody can provide a work-around / fix.

    Hi Marshall Bilodeau,

You can update using data loader and below are the steps:

    1) make sure the created new record types have the proper picklist field values is assigned (go to record types in setup and check the picklist fields, verify the value is assigned or not)

    2) extract the records from salesforce using dataloader/workbench/reports (file should be csv)

    3) update again using data loader/workbench (if you facing any issue to mass update then change the batch size in data loader settings)

Refer Salesforce Document for more details:

    Thanks & Regards,
