How to create a custom object with the record of a standard object

Question

I have to manage an instance of Salesforce that has been set up several years ago by someone else.  I would like to take advantage of lightning tabs in my opportunity object but is is not working because it only works in custom objects. (as far as I understand).  Is there a way to create a new custom object and by any means add records from my standard object (opportunity) to the new one ? (without screwing all up) Thanks very much for your help.

Are you speaking about dynamic forms? If so, just wait a few months - they'll be available for standard objects soon.

Creating a custom object would not be a good idea. You'd have to change your reporting, data model, and any functionality associated with opportunities.
