Functionality desires:
1) Add links to Sales Opps incorporating data such as Close Date and Amount
2) Some sort of status indicator
3) Link to Activities for the concept of next steps
4) Link to Contacts in the Account
5) view by month or fiscal quarter
6)360 view of Account Planning
Custom Life Cycle of Pre-Sale, Sale, Implementation, Support. Great if Timeline functionality has the ability to link to all these things.

Visual flows are a tool you can use either to guide a user through a series of screens or can be used in the background as automation.
I meant that the different things you have mentioned above can be accomplished with salesforce functionality. You of course can look in already apps that may give you an off shelf solution: https://appexchange.salesforce.com/appxSearchKeywordResults?keywords=opportunity%20timeline
But you can look at internally build one of each bits.
