I have a public calendar setup for our sales people.  They may create private events or public events from the Lead page by clicking the Create Event button.  Private events are created with no problems, but how would the users create an event in the public calendar?

We also have a trigger tied to the creation of an event on a lead.  There are some circumstances when we want to force a new event into the public calendar.

How would I accomplish these things?

Thanks!

Public Calendars are a great tool for sharing resources and out of office schedules. Due to some limitations I would stay away from them for relating them to Leads. Instead I would look at your sharing rules and make sure that other users can view activities. If you have a private sharing model you could add a 'public' checkbox to the event and any event marked as 'public' would be shared using org-wide sharing rules.

The end calendar view isn't as pretty as a public calendar but it accomplishes the goal of sharing events. You could use a report or list view to display the 'public' events that are flagged.

Another option is to use Campaigns instead of Public Calendars. It's a workaround yes, and not at all how Campaigns are meant to be used, but if you want that "Calendar-like" view you can accomplish the same with a Campaign Calendar app found on the appexchange. Test first in the sandbox to see if that would meet your needs.
