I had this problem; the issue is that by commenting out the entire formula, you have no formula left - it finds the "end of formula" instead of finding a formula to run. You just need to add something for the system to read.
In my case it was a text formula, and I added "Uncomment & remove from page layout" after the commented-out formula (to remind me to do this when this bit of work was moved into a new org). But you could also just put ""
