Last Case Comment doesn't work in Lightning

I recently read in this help article that the Last Case Comments merge field doesn't work in Lightning. 2 questions:

1) When will it be available in Lightning??

2) What is a current work-around??

Hello Maria,

If possible create Custom field on Case & for that refer this.
