So if the full postcode was BH10 5YH - I only want to see the BH10 part.
So far I have this:
IF(CONTAINS("0:1:2:3:4:5:6:7:8:9",RIGHT(LEFT(Mailing Post Code,2),1)),
LEFT(Mailing Post Code,1),
LEFT(Mailing post Code,2)
)
but I get a syntax error: 'found 'mailing' (related field: Formula)
I thought I fixed it by putting the Mailing post code in quotes, but all that achieved is the formula returning Ma ...
I don't care where the postcode is geographically; my intention is to use the field in a report, so I can group all the different BH10's, 11,s etc to display them on a graph.

Liz, I can see you have space in the field name you are using in your formula. It's seems you are using the label of the field and not the API name.
Field API name does not have any space. eg. MailingPostCode
