Excel Functions will not work in Salesforce Report Export

Would anyone have any suggestions as to why a report exported from Salesforce and saved as an Excel workbook would not work with standard Excel function.

In my case I am trying to concatenate (2) fields using =CONCATENATE e.g. =CONCATENATE(FirstName," ",LastName) instead of returning the specified field it just returns the formula when I hit enter.

Here's the official answer and some related complaints ... looks like only easier answer is to first save as CSV to strip all formatting then save as to Excel
