Licenses over time

I'm trying to create a chart that tracks license count over time (quarterly) based on start and end dates in the object. Initially I thought I'd just create some calculated fields for the quarters however that doesn't seem to be an option. Any ideas on how to do this?

You may want to think about using snapshot reporting.
