I would have expected the following:
1) Define custom multi-picklist field on the Product object. This acts as the master picklist set of values for this field for all products. So far, so good.
2) Create a new Product, select just the multi-picklist valuse that you want to apply to that particular Product. So far, still rockin'.
3) Add a Product to the Opportunity (Opportunity Product) and select the specific multi-picklist value(s) for that product line. Oops! The house of cards falls down. It doesn't seem that the Product field shows up as an available Opportuntity Product field for the User to select from.
This seems odd to me. Am I missing something? What is the purpose of a multi-picklist on a Product if you can't use it when adding an Opportunity Product?
Adding that as a custom field on the Opportunity Product doesn't seem to give the expected or desired behavior: If you add it on the Opportunity Product, then you have to add the "master list" of picklist values, which is precisely what the specific Product list was enabling me to avoid!
Ex.) A multi-picklist for areas covered by a service (Room, Closet, Driveway, Yard)
1) A Custom Product field called "Spaces" would include a multi-picklist with values of Room, Closet, Driveway, and Yard
2) Create a specific Product called "Outdoor Service" including the "Spaces" picklist values of Driveway and Yard. Create another specific Product called "Indoor Service" including the "Spaces" picklist values of Room and Closet.
3) Add the "Outdoor Service" Product to an Opportunity, where only Driveway and Yard would appear in the "Spaces" picklist, and I would only need to choose "Driveway".
That is the behavior I would have expected. It's not the behavior I seem to be getting.
Surely this is a common need. How is this handled in Salesforce?

Hi. Hope you all had happy holidays! I'm saddened to see that my suspicions seem to be correct: the picklist values have to be independently created on the Opportunity Product. The result would be a significant proliferation of Products, since these picklists have to vary by location.
