I'm looking for a way to add an image to custom HTML email templates that follows best practices.  I've searched everywhere, and the answer always seems to be the same:  Use the URL from the image stored in your Salesforce instance, something like this:

<img alt="Sig" height="120" src="https://mycompany-c.na71.content.force.com/servlet/servlet.ImageServer?id=01537xxxxxxy3BE&amp;oid=00D37xxxxxxPvmg&amp;lastMod=1481749431000" width="202">

But that is a hard coded URL which is subject to change.  I noticed that all of my custom templates had broken images, and it was because the instance changed to "na71".  Is that the only way to do it?  I tried using externally hosted images at one point and had problems, so I always saved them in my org and used the above method.  Is there another way to do it so both internal and external recipients can see the image?

    Hi @Chris Soricelli - did you find any other way to do this ? If I follow the same approach.. further I deploy (Email template) to higher org. If some one delete the img file from lower org where I uploaded. So it would be broke the flow.. do you have any alternative approaches ??
