Is there a way to create a dependence on an autonumber field? I'm looking to create case numbers but I'd like them to be dependent on the date the case is reported. The date the case is reported is a date that i choose. The autonumber is pretty simple {YYYY}-{000}.

Unless I'm missing something that's exactly what you would do! :-)
Go into Setup --> Customize --> Cases --> Fields --> "Click 'New'" --> "Select "Auto Number" and fill out the details using the display format you have listed above.
You can then decide if this is a unique ID, is required, add it to existing records etc.
