Best practice for account name changes / insolvent / re-opened

What is the best way to handle an account with history and activities, that closes then re-opens with a different name but the same contacts?  The team that deals with the account want to retain the history but I am uncomfortable with just changing the account name, which is what they have suggested.

 

Any ideas?

    On our SFDC org we enter things like Company names, Known Alias's, Acronyms, AKA, etc in a custom Text field. We also use custom fieldfs like an "Active" checkbox to indicate that the Account/Company is still in business or has been shuttered.
