Is a multi-select picklist the only way?

We want to record interest areas andhave 55 different interest areas to choose from; each account could have multiple interest areas.  I have set them up as a multi-select picklist, which works to an extent, but it is hard to report on due to the general limitations of this kind of field.  It works if we just want to find all customers with an interest in Eggs or Bacon for example, but not if we want to see how many customers are interested in each category.

 

With so many different values to choose from, do I just have to resign myself to the fact that we can't get much of a report from this, or is there another way I can approach it?
