The "Recent Opportunities" section has the default view "Recently Viewed" which is actually quite pointless for day-to-day management of opportunities. Our team want to see opportunities open, not just viewed. I understand you can make a customer View and select it from the drop down list, but ths is one extra step for a person to do. 'm looking to customize the default page for all users so instead of displaying "Recently Viewed" opportunities we can show open opportunties sorted by latest opportunity first.

There is no way to customize the default layout without creating a custom page in Visualforce. If you're interested in going that route- I'd suggest poking aroung on the Developer boards.
