Numbers don't display on all line graphs

I'm working on building a dashboard that will compare a cumulative look at how many leads are created by fiscal year and month.  I'd like to use a line or bar graph and have each month plotted showing a cumulative look and then a different bar or line showing the previous or next year.

 

I'm really close to completing this request but I have run into two problems.  If I want a cumulative look, I can only use a line graph, but the dashboard report won't show the numbers if I have two groupings (fiscal year and calendar month).  The bar graph will show the numbers by fiscal year and month, but doesn't have a cumulative look.

 

Has anyone else run into similar reporting limitations?  If so, what kinds of strategies have you used to work around this (if we don't have a BI tool at the moment)?
