Best Practice for Account-Based Marketing

Before creating an opportunity, we would like to track a certain process that our Account record goes through to get to that point. We have certain milestones (dates) that are checked off such as Research completed, C/VP Level Meeting, and Workshop completed. We would like to generate reports/statistics that help us evaluate this activity by month and also create conversion rates to track how long it takes for the account to go through these stages. Note some of these dates may be tracked on another records such as Contact.  Are there any best practices/tools out there to help?
