Accordingly, I...
- exported all of these Tasks
- deleted the data from their 'Description' fields
- updated those records with the Data Loader (insert null values = checked)
I have verified that the Description fields appear empty, and when I export these Tasks now, the resulting file is 350+ MB smaller than the original export. It certainly appears as though I removed a significant amount of data from our system.
However, when I view our Storage Usage (24 hours later), I do not see any sort of change in our Data Storage totals. We're still at 96%, and the storage space used by Tasks is unchanged. I even purged our recycle bin for good measure.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Am I missing something?
Thanks!

Unless I'm missing a line somewhere, no one has answered this correctly yet.
SF storage is calculated based on record count, nothing more. Most objects (Tasks included by my recall) are 2k per record. It doesn't matter if the task is just baout empty, or if every single character possible is being used. It's 2k.Tasks take up over 65% of our storage. It's a neverending battle.
