Global search inconsistent in lightning compared to classic

My users are testing the lightning functionality in Sandbox and when they do a global search they see results only from the Contacts object( varies from user to user but all of them see only one object). When they go to classic and do the same global search it shows all the relevant objects. Did any one experiece the same behaviour in Lightning? Are there any search setting that need to be set?
