Which is the best way to create our email templates?

I'm interested to know how everyone is managing their email templates in Lightning. I have come across this in all of my implementations in Lightning of the limitations the email templates bring:

1. Lightning Email Templates -  Cannot add images BIG issue with end customers
2. Classic HTML Templates - Cannot have attachments, can add images but not as hyperlinks
3. Classic Custom Templates - Non-editable in lightning, Cannot add additional attachments.

What is everyone else doing to get around this, I would love to hear of any assistance with this? 

I did see in the Lightning road map they will be piloting the ability to create HTML templates in Lightning in Spring '18. Does anyone know how to get on this Pilot?
