I'm trying to understand the capabilities and limitations of the Identity license in relation to Data Cloud operations, specifically around data transformations.

    Hi Yasir,

The Identity license in Salesforce is primarily designed for authentication and basic access to your Salesforce org—it’s not meant for full-featured data manipulation or advanced Data Cloud operations.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what the Identity license can and cannot do in relation to Data Cloud:

    what it can support:

    • logging in users securely via single sign-on (SSO)
    • enabling self-service portals or communities
    • accessing limited apps like Experience Cloud with strict permission control

what it cannot support (or is very limited with):

    • direct access to Data Cloud features like data lake objects, harmonization, unification, or calculated insights
    • performing data transformations or activations
    • running complex segmentation or personalization flows
    • writing or manipulating data through flows or apex involving Data Cloud

if you’re looking to use Data Cloud for data transformations, you’ll need a Data Cloud license, typically tied to users who need to configure models, run insights, or activate data to marketing, sales, or service tools.

    recommendation:

    • use the Identity license for lightweight or external user access
    • assign full Salesforce or Data Cloud user licenses for anyone involved in actual data management, unification, or transformation workflows
