Good afternoon all,

Hoping you can help with offering how you handle soft credits + donor advisors. I'm sure this comes up for lots of folks but we're having trouble nailing down the best way to handle.

We frequently have donor advisors that advise donors about where to give. We'd like to soft credit the advisor so that we're aware that they had a big assist in the gift.

We use rollup fields in the account (whether household or org) to total giving within a certain year.

Right now, the advisor is included as part of the donor household. This is good since the total giving will just be counted in the donor household and not independently for the advisor.

But the problem is that advisors often advise multiple people, and they can only have one primary household. We want a way to:

  • Indicate that the advisor contributed towards us getting a gift (like with a soft credit) BUT ALSO
  • Not restrict the advisor to one advisee / household since many advise multiple folks, AND ALSO
  • We don't want the advisor themselves to have the soft credited gifts included in their annual totals, since it's not their personal giving

So my questions for you are:

  • How do you manage gifts where an advisor advised the donor? Do you use soft credits in this case? If so, what household is the advisor in? Does the gift count toward their individual total?

Thanks in advance!

@Amy Tarleton This article gives the general gist of it: https://www.salesforceben.com/guide-to-salesforce-npsp-soft-credits/

    For filter groups

you can create one specifically for this use case, then apply it to rollups for those fields. For example, this is the standard Soft Credit Filter Group, but you can clone and edit to be just the role(s) you want.
