Retrieve Source from Org error

Hello.  I'm very new to SalesForce development.  I've authorized my org and am able to connect and browse through my org.  However, when trying to "Download Source from Org", I get "This command can only be used on orgs that have source tracking enabled, such as sandboxes and scratch orgs."  However, if I close VSCode and reopen it, whatever I tried to download will be present.  How can I get rid of the error message and avoid having to close and re-open?
