I've added a custom action to create a new project (a custom object) with reduced field set but I keep getting an error message to select a record? How can I not have this linked to an existing record since I'm trying to create a new record?

I think it is possible. But the problem here is something else.

It seems that you need a related object when creating a record.

Therefore, the error message is that you need to select the relevant record.
