Our nonprofit handles computer hardware donation, loaners, and support, so I hoped to start with getting a help desk going first (Service Essentials). How can I get the prebuilt Service Essentials module added to my NPSP trial org?

Service Essentials is another kind of Salesforce. It is a product like the Enterprise Edition, which we get as Nonprofits, only more streamlined and at a much cheaper price-point than ours would be if we were paying for it. With the Enterprise Edition, you already have the basics for a help desk. You have the Cases object, and you can set up a Service Console.

You can start here: https://help.salesforce.com/articleView?id=support_console.htm&type=5 and here: https://help.salesforce.com/articleView?id=console_lex_intro.htm&type=5

There are some good Trailhead modules you can use to teach yourself how to set that up. You have everything you need for this in the Salesforce you have, but if you want to create a Community and have your customers interact with you via a web interface, you'll need to purchase customer community licenses.
