@Sarah Thomas, I would recommend working through those sections in the link I provided, as it will give you the steps you should take, including running a Dry Run to ensure that the data you are importing isn't going to run into duplicate conflicts on import.
There are sections like Prepare Salesforce for your Import, and then Prepare your Data for Import, I would recommend following those through.
I would also recommend that if you are close to a User Group in your area, that you meet with other people in the Salesforce community! There are a great number of individuals who have been, or are currently, going through exactly what you are, learning the system.
