Hi,

I have two custom objects:

  • Available_Opps_c (Master)
  • Role_applications_c (Details)

On

Available_Opps_C we have a lookup field named Manager which looks up to their User record.

We also have a field named Manager on the Role_Applications object. This field also looks up to their user record too.

This has caused the issue that when the name is changed on the Available Opps Manager field, it doesn’t update the field on Role_Applications, despite them being in a master-details relationship.

I also think there are some automated processes in place which rely on these two fields to be individual lookups to the user record.

I’m trying to remedy this issue using Process Builder to automate the field change on one object, to update the other.

To complicate things a bit, we are now creating contact records for Managers which have a lookup to their User record.

It is hoped that I could add an additional lookup field - "Manager_Contact” to the Available_Opps object which would lookup to their Contact record, and that by changing this value, it would automatically update the pre-existing Manager lookup field on both custom objects to the correct user record (Not Contact record).

Is this possible, given that the Contact record has a look up field to User record and displays the User ID value on the page layout?

Is anyone able to advise me here of the best way to implement this; one that doesn’t involve changing the original Manager lookup field type?

I’ve not used Process Builder before, so any steps or links to a similar implementation would be extremely helpful.

Thank you.

So if I follow your reqs correctly:

Object A (Available_Opps_c) is the parent of Object B?

Object A has a user lookup

    Object B (Role_applications_c) has a user lookup

Object A has a contact lookup that has a user lookup.

When Object A's contact lookup is populated or changed, you want to update Object A's user lookup and then Object B's user lookup. If yes...see below, if no...let me know where I'm off.

Create a PB on Object A

    Evaluate when created or evaluated

Criteria: the below formula is using another contact lookup in my dev org...yours will read [Available_Opps].YourManagerContactLookuField__c.  This criteria says the rule will fire when a Manager contact field is changed from null to populated or when it is changed after it is initially populated.

    Formula:

    OR(

    AND(ISBLANK(PRIORVALUE([Account].Primary_Sales_Contact__c)),[Account].Primary_Sales_Contact__c<>null),

    ISCHANGED([Account].Primary_Sales_Contact__c))

    FieldUpdate 1:

    Record that started the process

Update Manager User Lookup to equal formula ManagerContactLookupField.UserID

     FieldUpdate 2:

    Related Records

    Role_applications_c

Update Manager User Lookup to equal formula ManagerContactLookupField.UserID
