A client of mine no longer wants to differentiate Company objects based on record type: they do want to see record types as a choice on creating objects.
Once the record type has been removed from the profile, is it merely a matter of deleting the record type? Is there any impact on the actual Object.
My concern is ensuring there is no damage to the record.

Removal of record types will have no repercussions on data other than the records being no longer differentiated by the present record types.
After the profile-> record type assignment has been removed, deactivate and then just delete the record type and you should be golden. Just remember that you will need to remove record type references in any automations/rules that might have been built otherwise you won't be able to delete/deactivate them.
