Opportunity close date when stage is close won

I currently have an issue where the system does not update the close date to today's date for opportunities with  historic date when opportunity stage is changes to closed won and saved.

 

Please how can I ensure that for both opportunities with historic and future dates once the stage changes to closed won, the system updates the close date to today's date. We also want users to be able to go in an edit the date (in exceptional cases where the date may need to be changed) - we are having loads of issues where opportunities are closed with historic dates

    You can create a Workflow Rule + Field Update like this = 

    1. Setup | Create | Workflows & Approvals | Workflow Rules
    2. New Rule
    3. Select the Object: Opportunity
    4. Evaluation Criteria: created and every time it's edited [2ND OPTION]
    5. Rule Criteria: formula evaluates to true
    6. Formula: 

      AND(
          OR(
              ISNEW(),
              ISCHANGED(StageName)
          ),
          CASE(
              StageName,
              "Closed Won", 1,
              "Closed Lost", 1,
              0
          ) == 1
      )
    7. Click Save & Next
    8. From under Immediate Workflow Actions, click Add Workflow Action to select Field Update
    9. Select the Field to Update: CloseDate
    10. Select Use a Formula to Set the New Value
    11. Formula:

      TODAY()
    12. Click Save
    13. Hit Done
    14. Activate!
