Can I select a record type when in a lookup in Classic?

I'm trying to get Salesforce Classic to replicate the behavior of Lightning. In Lightning when I click on a lookup field I can create a new contact, and then it lets me choose which Contact Record Type i'd like to use before creating the new contact. (In our org salespeople can create 2 different Contact Record Types).

However, in classic when I'm in a lookup and click on New it automatically brings up the default record type without prompting which contact record typue i'd like to create. Is there a way to change this behavior to give me a choice? Or to have a particualar lookup field default tp a certain record type?
