I certainly can't speak officially for Salesforce Product Development, but I would imagine that the general idea on the Salesforce platform is to drive use of Chatter + Communities in terms of business-related social networking. That said, there are lots of external social media integration features available, particularly if you venture into the Marketing Cloud.
