I haven't tested it but I strongly feel that wouldn't work because there is that relationship existing between the User and the Profile deep down their Database.
Deleting the Profile would disturb, technically called - Foreign Keys(that's what it is called in mere Database Terminologies) and I don't think Salesforce would allow that.
