How to link two objects in a custom report.

Question

I am trying to create a custom report with Asset as the main Object and Cases as the have/not have Object. I have an Asset (lookup) on Cases, and a reltaed list on Assset. What am I missing here to create the custom report?

I used the standard report type, and then made it a joined report with a custom Asset report.

we don't have a master-child relationship between assets and cases.
