We have accounts that are inter-related example ABC account has XYZ as a consultant account.  The two are separate accounts however as ABC account won't buy until XYZ says its OK.  The salesperson needs to know what are the consultants accounts for ABC accounts and what accounts XYZ is the consultant.

I built the custom object and added account as look-up so when a user adds a new "related company" it will appear in the related list at the bottom of the page.  However, when I add XYZ consultants account to ABC account it goes away from the related list on ABC and is added to XYZ.

What I am missing to make this happen; any ideas would really be appreciated?

Do you have multiple page layouts?  There shouldn't be any reason for that assuming you have all the right permissions

    https://help.salesforce.com/apex/HTViewHelpDoc?id=partners_edit.htm&language=en_US (https://help.salesforce.com/apex/HTViewHelpDoc?id=partners_edit.htm&language=en_US)

Are you editing the page layout directly from a detail page or from the setup menu?  If from a detail page, just confirming that you dragged Partners into the list like this:

Is there any chance it is sitting there (in my case under Notes and Attachments) but is called something else because someone renamed the label?

Setup > Customize > Tab Names and Labels > Rename Tabs and Labels

for example I renamed mine some time ago to Partner2:

    User-added image

which is how it appears on the detail page but on the page layout editor it's still just partner
