What is the best practice for handling contacts that cross multiple different areas?  We need to be able to segment our contacts by the area they deal with, but there are currently 32 different areas and each contact could have multiple areas.  We are hoping to narrow the choices down but I can't see it reducing to less than 15, as the very least.

As far as I can see I have two choices: a multi select picklist (worried about this as it may be needed in workflows in the future) or a single tick box for each area.

The single tick boxes would at least be able to be put in a page section, and hidden unless required. It would also enable an explanation against each field in the help section, which in theory would help with data quality.

What other options have I missed?  Can anyone think of any pros and cons to what I have suggested?

Thanks!

    Hi Sara,

What is the context of 'areas'? ie expertise for example? or relationship to multiple accounts?

if A, I would probably have related records to track that 1-to-many

if B, have a look to contacts to multiple accounts functionality

    Others?

    Let me know,
