I have an old field in the account section that was hidden but re-activated so I can see the data.  I pulled it onto the account section in the page layout and saved it but when I look at an account I don't see it.

Have you checked to see if you have the correct permission level to read the field? You can do so by clicking "Set Field-Level Security" on the field detail page. Make sure your profile has the "Visible"checkbox as checked. Let me know if this helps.
