Is it possible to perform an Upsert on a Lookup Field?

Question

We have outsourced our company's business card processing to a third-party vendor that puts all the contact details into a .csv format. However, I'm running into problems upserting these new contacts into Salesforce because the "Comany" and "Contact Relationship Owner" fields are Lookup fields in Salesforce. Is there a way to work-around that anyone has seen for this issue?

Hi again,

Then the import wizard is what you should use.

Put your users names in a column of your csv file (same name used in sfdc), and the import wizard will recognize that directly. No ID needed.

(The "upsert" threw me off a little, sorry)

Hi Mr Admin,   	   	To do an Upsert, you either need the parent record ID, or it's unique identifier.   	And by unique identifier, I mean the content of a custom Text Field, for which you have checked the "set as external ID" checkbox during the field's setup.   	   	I know for having tried that Record Owners can't be upserted.   	So you'll have to use a v-lookup function in excel to add each user's SFDC ID to your csv file.   	   	Honestly I am not sure about the Account lookup. I've upserted custom objects linked to accounts using external IDs, but for the standard "Account" lookup within contact, i'm not certain.   	Anyhow, since you outsourced the business card processing, I assume they provide you with new accounts and new contacts, so you just won't have any SFDC ID for accounts at your disposal.   	   	Have you tried the Import Wizard ?   	It can do wonders. I suggest you match contacts with email address, an excellent unique identifier, and account with Name.    	   	Sorry the answer isn't very convenient.
