is a required field that I cannot move off the page or edit.
However, when I save this page layout and view the actual page,
"Close Date" displays as "Proposed Start Date":
The field names and strings for both of these fields are unique,
so I don't know what's causing this issue.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

just check whether you have changed field label name from rename tab and label.
